Baby Sign Language Really Works

August 16th, 2011 Brandy Kai 5 Comments

We enrolled Kai into his first sign language class when he was 4 months old. He couldn’t sit up yet so it was quite tricky to hold him while singing and signing to him. I loved it though! After that class finished we re-enrolled for another 10 weeks. Honestly, the songs were a little tired for me but it was nice to practice for a designated hour every week. Around 9 or so months Kai gave me a little joy by signing milk once or twice. After that we hit a dry spell for about 3 months. I continued to sign to him but had talked myself down by thinking that he wouldn’t sign to me and that’s okay. I continued to sign the eating basics; eat, milk, more, drink and all done. Around 13 months is when he started signing all done to me. After that day, it’s been more and more signs everyday.

Kai signing more, a real favorite for him.

At, 15 1/2 months he signs everyday. Milk, more, thank you, all done, and want are all daily occurrences. I love it!

Happy signing. :)

Should You Bring Your Baby To Haramara Yoga Retreat In Sayulita Mexico

May 31st, 2011 Brandy I'm Just Saying..., Travel 2 Comments

We planned this aggressive yoga trip back in 2010 when Kai was a newborn. Two of our favorite teachers in Portland were hosting a week long yoga retreat in Sayulita, Mexico and we wanted in on it. The teachers assured us that bringing an 11 month old baby with us would be just fine. It was fine but I wouldn’t want to do it again.

Kai and I at Choco Banana restaurant in downtown Sayulita. (2 days before the yoga retreat)

Haramara yoga retreat in Sayulita Mexico is a wonderful sanctuary for adults. The casitas and restaurant are open air without walls and are located high on the mountainside in Sayulita. Kai started walking about 2 weeks before we left for Mexico which made things even more intense. With no walls and lots of cliffs, I felt like I couldn’t take my eyes off of him for one second. In addition to the high cliffs there was no electricity of any kind. Headlamps and lots of hiking to get back and forth made for a bonus workout all day long.

This retreat included 4-6 hours of yoga/meditation everyday which seemed like a good idea when we paid for it a year earlier. Luckily, they had a crib at Haramara which I thought would make sleeping better. It wasn’t the case because it was so light and with the crib next to our bed, Kai would wake up every 2-3 hours screaming until I nursed him. After the first night, I woke up with a bad stomach which turned into five days of the Mexican torture. Kai began vomiting and refused to eat any food for the next five days so it turned into survival mode for me. Let me paint the picture, no sleep, yoga twice a day (with an option of a seated meditation up to 2 hours before sunrise), bad Mexican stomach and daily 90min deep tissue massages. In theory, the daily 90min massages sound awesome but they even became too much. We were doing the meditation, the yoga, rushing through breakfast and then doing the massage with a quick trade of Kai. I don’t remember having 5 minutes of downtime on that trip.

The really exciting part was hiring local nannies in Mexico when we arrived. I had a lot of anxiety about this and kept talking myself down saying to myself, it’ll be fine… It was fine but quite stressful for me. I know I’m not supposed to say this but yes, I was worried that someone would steal my cute little baby.

Here are a few pictures of local nannies that we hired for $15 US dollars/hour through a babysitting site in Sayulita.

A babysitter from the first hotel that we stayed at was very sweet and watched Kai while Sean and I went running.

Kai’s regular nanny and my favorite nanny was a girl named Amaranda who was recommened by Haramara yoga retreat

She came to Haramara twice a day and would arrive as early as 6am. We liked Amaranda so much we asked her to come to home with us! She was flattered but wasn’t  interested. She said that is some people’s dream but wasn’t hers. If you are visiting Sayulita and want an excellent nanny who speaks and reads english at a conversation level, let me know.

The three of us having a snuggle in the restaurant during dinner

Overall, the trip was good with some tough parts but I’m glad we did it. We wanted to go so badly and I think we would have wondered what it would’ve been like. Now we know. Haramara yoga retreat was a beautiful place to do yoga but I recommend leaving your baby at home. I definitely felt like I needed a vacation from our “vacation.” I’m just sayin…

Taking Kai To Spin Class

May 26th, 2011 Brandy Fitness 3 Comments

Kai and I walking into the gym before I taught my spin class

I teach a 5pm spin class on Wednesday nights and have experimented with taking Kai with me. It’s worked out once at the gym daycare where they didn’t come upstairs to pull Sean out of class multiple times. Last night, Sean was out of town and Kai is almost 13 months old so I thought it was a good time to “try it alone.” There are two worst case scenarios where they come and get you out of class. One is pooping (because they won’t change diapers) and the other is crying for more than a few minutes. The crying has happened to us a number of times and I just crossed my fingers and toes last night as I waved goodbye and walked upstairs to teach my class. I was a little nervous after he had two silly little naps yesterday and seemed really cranky around 4pm. To make it even more exciting, babies take 3 spots so I needed to get there extra early.

Kai having one last feed 15 minutes before class starts

There were 4 spots left after we arrived at 4:15pm so we made the cut! I hung out with him until 4:45pm, fed him a jar of baby food and let him nurse up until the end. I singled out one of the three girls (a different one from the other times) and told her I was alone and would appreciate it if she could “try” and keep him until 6pm. Her name was Katie and she said “oh he’ll be fine for an hour.”

Sure enough, Katie was holding him when I went to pick him up. She said he did really good but likes to be held a lot. Who doesn’t? :) She also said that she thought he had just pooped because he coughed and it sounded and smelled like it. Wow, what timing. Turned out it was just a power fart, no poop. I gave Katie a little tip and told her I’d see her next week!

Pumping On The Airplane, It Wasn’t As Bad As I Imagined

May 20th, 2011 Brandy Travel 10 Comments

Life has changed! I went back to work as an on call flight attendant on April 1st, 2011. Hectic is probably the best word to describe how it’s going. I appreciate working moms more than ever. Before, I went back to work I felt like I was scrambling for “enough” time to get stuff done and have a little fun. Now, it’s scrambling times 10.

If you ask my husband how it’s going he’ll tell you it’s tough but we’re surviving. If you ask me how it’s going, I’ll say where are those Maui layovers? I’ve had a few 4 day trips to Alaska, a few red eye flights and a few turns. The most interesting part for me is the pumping. So far, so good. I’m pumping 4 times a day and stashing my milk in ice buckets at hotel rooms. Keeping my pumped milk cold and lugging it around on my 4 day trip keeps me on my toes. Fortunately, I’ve only had to pump on the plane once. It was a San Jose turn last week and I was able to pump on the ground before boarding our flight home.

Tip: If you have to pump on an airplane, do it in the first class bathroom. Less traffic usually means cleaner and doesn’t smell as bad. (Of course, smell on an airplane is all relative)

On a bright note, Kai seems a little more keen toward the bottle these days. However, his new pediatrician (who I love) said at his one year appointment, forget the bottle! It’s over, move to the sippy cup. We’re still using the bottle when I’m working, but offer the sippy cup regularly. I haven’t had a Maui layover or a good trip for that matter. My fantasy of laying on the beach in Maui and sleeping in on a layover hasn’t happened yet. Maybe, this weekend?

Grocery Shopping With A Baby

March 22nd, 2011 Brandy I'm Just Saying... 1 Comment

I think baby Kai is the best grocery shopping buddy. He’s almost 11 months and loves sitting in the cart. Kai flirts with everyone who walks by so shopping is pretty social. I love giving him an orange to smell and watching him open his mouth and start nibbling. He isn’t old enough to ask for anything yet so he’s literally along for the ride. I know one day that’ll change so I’m enjoying every minute of his sweet baby company for now.

Nine Months Up, Nine Months Down is True

February 21st, 2011 Brandy I'm Just Saying... 4 Comments

I was newly pregnant and running with my running mamas group when I first heard, “9 months up, 9 months down.” Meaning you gain weight while pregnant for 9 months and it takes at least 9 months after the baby is born to lose it. Back then, 9 months to lose the baby weight sounded like a long time to me. Today, it seems quite reasonable to take 9 months to lose the baby weight. Funny how your perspective can change when you’re in the midst of it.

Part of the reason that I wanted to take 9 months to lose the baby weight was because breastfeeding and working out were really important to me. My doctor (who I love) told me that it will be a numbers game for me. She said, I’d need to eat plenty of daily calories if I wanted to breastfeed while teaching spin, running and doing power yoga. It was easy to take her advice in the beginning because I was constantly hungry. For the first 3 months, it seemed like I ate, nursed and worked out. No sleep, because baby Kai was always a great eater. I am fortunate to have a loving husband who cheered us on day or night. Sean would make me a midnight or 2am sandwich during the “fourth trimester” to hold me over til brekky.

Around 4 months is when my appetite cooled off. I no longer felt like the hungry catapillar eating my way through life. However, I was committed to breastfeeding Kai for at least 6 months so continued to gorge myself so I could keep my milk supply up and workout like crazy. There were many times when I wasn’t hungry but forced myself to “put it away.” Whether it was a burger, beer and fries at North 45 or ice cream sandwiches, I chucked it down. North 45, an upscale pub in NW Portland is one of my favorite places for the food, love for dogs and babies! My buddy co owner, Josh Johnston says “bring the baby,” drink beer. :)

At our 4 month check up, my pediatrician wanted me to wait until Kai was 6 months old before introducing solids. I was a little bummed because I was tired of forcing my self to eat insane amounts of food. I focused on the treats and it seemed pretty easy to keep the weight on. Around 7 months is when I started to recognize my body. After a month in New Zealand and Kai’s 4 teeth popping through the gums, we all started sleeping. It was glorious to go from waking up every 2 hours in New Zealand to 11-12 hours straight at night! After a couple of weeks of sleep, I decided to step it up a bit with my workouts. I added a couple of workouts and started limiting my treats to once a day.

Stuffing my face with food for 7 months paid off because baby Kai is 9 1/2 months old and we are still breastfeeding. And, I’m officially back to my pre-baby weight. Nine months later- it feels good to be back!

The First Baby Tooth Is Cute but So Sharp!

January 12th, 2011 Brandy I'm Just Saying..., Kai No comments

Finally, baby Kai cut his first tooth! I think he was teething aggressively for a month. Drooling, putting everything in his mouth, waking up alnight-the usual teething symtoms. I was so excited to feel and then see his upper front tooth bust through the gums a few days ago. Along with that first tooth came nightime sleep for us. Thank you baby tooth fairy for sleep, it is life changing. However, I’m surprised that such a tiny little tooth could feel so sharp? I find that it’s the worst during dream feeds. I’ll take a sharp tooth for sleep anyday. I’m not complaining, I’m just sayin…

Travel Tips For Packing And International Flights With A Baby

January 10th, 2011 Brandy Travel 4 Comments

First of all, packing for a month long trip overseas with a baby seems like a very important task. It was but I learned a lot.

1. Bring half the stuff and twice the money is great advice

I didn’t listen to this piece of wisdom as I packed all 16 of our new and half used sunscreen bottles. I also brought over a hundred balance and think thin bars. In my defense, we found we didn’t love the bars in New Zealand last year so I brought almost 120 bars to tide us over for the month. Enough bars for us to have on our flights and at least one bar a day. They’re healthy, delicious and we love our think thin bars at home. However, I had a strong change of heart as I found myself sitting on the airport floor in Portland trying to repack and reposition everything to avoid the hefty $400 overweight charge by our friends at United Airlines.
Next time, I will bring 1 bottle of sunscreen to get us started and maybe 20 bars for a fun treat.

2. Request a baby bassinet

I vaguely remember seeing baby bassinets on other international flights I’d been on BK (before Kai). Anyway, when I called Air New Zealand to request a baby bassinet they told me there are 4 onboard and are given to the youngest babies. I figured as long as there aren’t two sets of twins flying to Auckland, we’re in the money. When we scooted over to the international terminal in SFO, I was aghast as I started counting the baby strollers roaming the boarding area, five, six, seven… Luckily, we scored one of the four baby bassinets for our 12 hour flight to Auckland. I watched movies and Sean played his angry bird game. It was a total treat! Later, we learned there were 12 infants onboard our flight!

3. Take an evening flight if possible

I think most of the long international flights departing from the US are in the evening so that makes it easy.

4. Don’t forget weight matters

I was so proud of myself for buying two ginormous roller bags. I figured I could cram everything into the two bags to “keep it simple.” Packing and traveling with large bags that don’t fit in the overhead bins is new to me. Turns out, size isn’t everything-such is life. Weight matters and it matters a lot with checked luggage. Surprise! Every airline has their own rules but United celebrates a 50 pound weight limit for each checked bag. Any bag weighing more than 50 pounds will cost you an extra $200. Bummer to start your trip that way so don’t forget weight matters. Less is better :)

5. Bring toys but leave your baby monitor at home

Turns out, I didn’t use a few baby gear items that I use regularly at home. For example, our white noise machine went tits up when we arrived in Ohope, New Zealand. It wouldn’t turn off unless we took the batteries out and it didn’t work when plugged in. The graco sound machine was stuffed back into my bag where it stayed all month. I certainly don’t hold a grudge against the graco sound machine, it still remains to be one of my favorite baby items. We’re lucky because we had the ocean singing to us right outside our window, a built in white noise machine if you will. Because there was a lot of co-sleeping going on, my baby monitor stayed in my bag for the entire trip. However, the toys were good. Having a variety of toys really paid off. They entertained Kai and bought me some good ole fashioned free time in the morning. And, bringing 20 small toys and books allowed me to pay it forward and leave a few in the kiddie room for the next traveler.

Happy Travels!
