Rolling It Out Everyday In New Zealand

February 13th, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 5 Comments

Kai and I sharing the foam roller in our living room. I’ve been a huge fan of the foam roller for years! I used to like it for my legs and still do but the real treat is that it pops my back. Of course, when we got to New Zealand, I immediately started searching for my beloved foam roller. Yes, I use it everyday. Doesn’t seem to be that common in New Zealand so I special ordered it to the local sporting goods store. I paid $70 for my back popper. Pretty cheap if you think about the money you’ll save from chiropractic visits. Most of my Ohope friends have “rolled it out” after having dinner at our house and were really into it.

Surprisingly, Kai is pretty keen toward the foam roller. It’s pretty stiff and hurts a little but the outcome is similar to a deep tissue massage. Like mother, like son.

Should I Drink Caffeine Before A Workout?

February 9th, 2012 Brandy Fitness 2 Comments

From my experience I think a little caffeine enhances a workout. However, it has to be properly timed or else I have to pee during my workout.

Running in New Zealand After having my caffeine

I’ll always remember running the San Diego marathon in June 2001 for my caffeine need story. I was running it with my girlfriend from high school and we were laying out our clothes the night before. I was scheming how I would get my coffee fix the next morning because she didn’t have it at her house. We had to wake up well before 5am and needed to leave early to get on a bus to be shuttled to the start. I remember buying a cold frappacino drink from the grocery store just in case our Starbucks run didn’t work out. Didn’t need it because Starbucks worked just fine. We pulled into the Starbucks drive through about 10 minutes before it opened, I knocked on the window and pleaded my story of needing my caffeine before the San Diego marathon. They couldn’t believe we were running the marathon and happily hooked us up with java. I’m pretty sure it was even on the house. Something my husband reminds me of nowadays is that you have to ask… I guess I’ve been asking all along. Good times.

Cheers to you and your drink of choice and may it serve you well!

Working Out After You Have Kids-Keep It Real

February 8th, 2012 Brandy Fitness 4 Comments

I’ve been saying this for years during my spin classes. Sometimes, you just need to keep the motor running or “Keep It Real.” Not everyday will be a PR day or feel like a fantastic workout. Most days I’ll just putter along with my workouts. Sure, I may have a few great moments during my workout but somedays the best moment happens AFTER I finish. The challenge of being fit with kids is to keep going…

Yes, sometimes I drink a diet coke while doing yoga

Personally, I don’t like to go more than 2 days without working out. I call it falling off the wagon and I believe most people are only 3 days away from falling off the wagon. Let’s say you’re working out, feeling great and loving life. Then life gets in the way a bit and your workouts fall away. After 3 days of no workouts, you notice all the extra time you have (working out takes time!) and how nice that extra time is. Then bam, there goes a week with no workouts. And the rest is history. I can’t tell you how often people tell me their story about how they used to go to the gym or used to love yoga before they had kids.

The hardest part for me is getting to my workout. Once I’m there and doing it I’m always glad. Glad not comfortable :)

My tips for Keeping It Real With Kids:

1. Make your workout a priority, similar to taking a shower. I always find time to take a shower

2. Find something that you love and do it at least 3 times a week

3. Talk about it with other people to keep yourself accountable

4. I put on my workout clothes first thing most mornings so I can’t “forget” or get to busy to workout. Sometimes, it takes all day but it happens eventually.

5. Use gadgets or rewards (heartrate monitor, group classes, music, lululemon clothes). Whatever excites you and keeps you going.

Spin Classes In Whakatane New Zealand

February 7th, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 3 Comments

I found my spin classes in Whakatane, New Zealand. So what if I’m the only one in the class? One of my favorite parts of spin is picking the music and I certainly get to do that in New Zealand. So what if I have to ride with tennis shoes and use my beach towel as a sweat towel. Travel, baby-you make it work!

Teaching and taking my spin class

( I love this photo because I naturally get bossy when I hop on that spin bike!)

There are two spin bikes upstairs at a cage fighting, boxing gym next to Sunnyz gym in Whakatane, New Zealand.

Happy workouts!

Ohope Beach Trail Running Is My Medicine

January 23rd, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 3 Comments

I love trail running. It makes me happy and calms my mind. “It is my medicine.”

I can rock out to my music and solve all my dilemmas while trail running. The footing can be a little slippery and steep to say the least so I have to watch my step. But it’s always worth it and I’m a better person after I take my medicine…

YogaGlo Is The Answer

January 12th, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 4 Comments

I’m over the hump of my 30 day yoga challenge. I’ve been whimpering and whining about missing my yoga classes in New Zealand so decided to do something about it. I went online and found a beautiful site called YogaGlo. It has over a 1,000 yoga classes to choose from where you can pick the style of yoga (vinyasa, yin, meditation, etc) duration (5 min-2 hours) and teacher. It’s a sweet deal if you like yoga classes and are unable to join while traveling or away from your studio. I stream the classes through my ipad and connect it to the tv so it’s a big beautiful picture.

They add new classes everyday so you don’t have to repeat classes if you’re looking for variety. And it only costs $18 US dollars a month for unlimited yoga so it won’t break the bank. I love yogaglo!

Trail Running In Ohope Beach New Zealand

January 11th, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 5 Comments

I tried a new trail run last week and this was the start of my hour long adventure! I’m not a big fan of stairs so was a little surprised to see so many. Like all the trail running here in Ohope Beach, it was an ass kicker.

Missing Yoga In Ohope New Zealand

January 2nd, 2012 Brandy Fitness, Travel 2 Comments

Part of travel is being uncomfortable. Sure, there are lots of exciting parts but sometimes I miss my yoga classes in Ohope New Zealand. Yes, I could do it alone at my apartment and yes I could do an online class by myself. For me, doing it at home alone isn’t the same as going to a yoga studio and sweating it out with 20+ other yogis. Here’s how it goes down at home for me: I’ll be in downward dog and think about tossing the clothes in the dryer real fast or write that one email before I forget about it. Suddenly, I’m piddling around the house cleaning up and my 5 minutes of yoga are over.

I know that part of being enlightened is self discipline and self practice but I haven’t gotten there yet. I’ve done a few 30 minute timed sessions by myself at home but miss the classes. Maybe, I’ll sign up for the online classes that I read about. Or maybe I’ll sign up for the yoga classes with Jane (the only yoga teacher I’ve heard about) in Whakatane. They start up again after the holidays in February.

Running in New Zealand Like A College Girl, Good Times

December 20th, 2011 Brandy Fitness, Travel 2 Comments

Kai kickin it in his pj’s during our morning run and as happy as a clam

If you run often you’ll know what I mean. Back in the day when I began my love affair with running at Oregon State, a mere 18 years ago anytime was a good time to run. I would run in the early morning or late at night. I remember driving to Dixon Recreation Center at OSU and running on the treadmill at 10 or 11pm! I was game to run 6 miles around the track or the treadmill, it didn’t matter. After a good 10 years of running, and a few marathons, I became a little pickier about where and when I wanted to run. Here in Ohope, New Zealand I’m running 4-5 days a week which is a lot for this baby mama. The trail runs are epic and running is the no brainer for me. Maybe, tomorrow I’ll hop on my borrowed 10 speed bike for a few sprints.

Nearing the end of our run, Kai started meditating before he fell asleep. He squeezed in a 20 minute power nap while I finished our run and cranked out a few kettlebell squats at the gym. Good times.

Six Reasons Why I Love Bikram Yoga

June 13th, 2011 Brandy Fitness 5 Comments

Recently, a dear friend of mine emailed me to ask what it is I love about the Bikram yoga?

I’ve been traveling, sick and recovering so haven’t had a chance to respond. David, here is what I love about the Bikram yoga:

Dazed and confused immediately after a bikram yoga class (notice the steam coming off my head)

1. It’s 112 degrees so I’m nice and warm the whole time (I hate to be cold)

2. The combination of the heat and the 90 minute class allows my mind to slow down

3. I sweat like crazy and feel like I’ve had a killer workout every time

4. The intensity feels like the first time, even though the poses are familiar (same 26 poses in the same order every time) It’s a guaranted workout!

5. It feels like a huge accomplishment so if nothing else gets done that day, I’m okay because I did my bikram yoga

6. I talk slower, think slower and move slower after a bikram yoga class. I take my yoga buzz with me for the rest of the day and in the midst of chaotic schedules, I am calm…
